The patterns used for the National Memorial quilt blocks are period patterns with a 9 patch setting - any pattern that has 9 equal parts so that the center square measures 1/3 size of a row across and and a row down.
The blocks need to measure between 7 3/4" and 8" UNFINISHED. Once these blocks are bound they will still measure 8" finished. Do not be confused as the pattern directions are for a 7.5" x 7.5" block. That would be the size of the block IF the block was finished as part of a standard type quilt. The 7.5" x 7.5" block patterns will be 7 3/4" to 8" unfinished. (Use SCANT 1/4" seams or your blocks will be too small)
Patterns that are appropriate for this quilt are listed to the right.
Please read section titled "Piecing Information" before starting your block. NOTE: , the link to" Piecing Information" will open up in a seperate PDF file format. For other states wishing to use this information, please email me for the Word file.
All blocks should be designed with a 3" 'off white;* square in the center for us to write the fallen heroes name, etc. More information about fabric available for the center squares will be forthcoming.
*8/28/14- Kona Bay 'off white' fabric is available for the center squares. Please use the contact form below if you would like to receive these squares by mail.
Since this is a 'community project' we ask that you construct the front of the block and allow us to add the binding, backing and batting so we can keep the blocks consistant. If you would like to write the back of the quilt please make sure you are using the appropriate black pen for fabric. Please, before mailing, make sure your block measures 8".
Information about the hero will be printed on the back of each block before we put them together.
Please send all blocks to Laura Torrenzano, 212 Gamache Drive, Ludlow, MA 01056.
Please attach your name, mailing address and phone to the back of the block on a piece of paper.
